Google Tag Manager's new container upgrade: what it means for your GA4 setup
/Google has started rolling out an optional upgrade in Google Tag Manager that brings your Google tag settings inside your GTM container. If you've logged into GTM recently, you may have seen a banner inviting you to "optimise" your container.
It's a worthwhile change for most businesses, and for a simple setup it doesn't take long. Here's what it is, why it matters and how to upgrade safely.
What's Changing
Until now, a typical GA4 setup in GTM has loaded two things on every page: the GTM container, and a separate Google tag library for each GA4 property or Google Ads account. After the upgrade, GTM sends data to Google products directly, without loading those extra libraries.
In Practice:
Your Google tag (the old GA4 configuration tag) is replaced by a Google Analytics destination tag, which holds your Measurement ID and settings.
Shared settings, such as automatic event detection and cross-domain domains, move into your container settings and apply to every Google product in the container.
Your existing GA4 event tags, triggers and non-Google tags stay as they are. Nothing needs rebuilding.
The Conversion Linker tag is now marked as legacy, because the new destination tags handle conversion linking themselves.
Why it's Worth Doing
Fewer scripts on your site. Removing the separate Google tag library means one less large file for every visitor to download. How much faster your pages get depends on your site, so measure before and after with PageSpeed Insights.
One place to manage settings. Cross-domain tracking, automatic events and user-provided data are set once at container level, instead of being spread across several Google tags that can drift out of sync.
A tidier container. The upgrade shows you where your Google tags have conflicting settings, which is often the first sign of a tracking problem.
